Okia Pendant
Guided by the studio’s ethos to create objects rooted in craft and longevity, the Okia pendant explores the connection between the ancient past and future. Hand forged from brass and steel, the material honors the honest and timeless approach of forging and smithing. In an age inundated by the digital, we wanted to create a light that harkened back to our collective, ancient past.
There is something extraordinary in uncovering modernity in ancient objects. The Minoan’s were sophisticated and curious and makers. They were reductive in their approach and objects serve functional needs, while celebrating the innate qualities of material.
Okia, derived from the ancient Greek term for shadow, is an exploration of material, scale and typology. The central armature of the fixture is produced through the ancient and elemental technique of forging and shaping metal. Hammered
and hand shaped, steel armatures support patinated brass reflectors, each containing a recessed light source which amplifies both light and shadow. Each module is made up of a pair of interlocking patinated brass reflectors, with a single recessed light source. Primordial in form, each module expresses a bonelike and anthropomorphic quality.
We wanted to create a light that was connected to the ephemeral quality of fire. An exploration of light and shadow. In an age of AI and digital iteration, we were keen to create a work that harkens back to our collective human history. A work that was intuitive and hand made. Existing within the interstitial space between ancient and contemporary. Something completely handmade, where the presence of the maker is evident. A piece inextricably connected to the past, while capturing the zeitgeist of this moment. A new work that aims to celebrate the human condition.
With a body constructed from forged metal extending from a hammered steel stemmed armature, every module is hand-crafted with blackened patinated exterior and a waxed brass interior. Wired with a high-output LED G9 source, each brass shield provides a warm glow.
The Okia pendant represents the first release of lighting for Editions Paolo Ferrari. This work is handmade in Canada and each work is individually produced.
